UPMC Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Center [18 Mar 2010|11:10pm]

[freakshownia]
Does anyone have any experience with them or know of people who do? Heard of good things? Bad things? I'm specifically interested in surgeons who specialize in rhinoplasty. Alternatively, if you know of any other awesome rhinoplasty surgeon in or around Pittsburgh I'd love to hear about them!

Tailors? [18 Mar 2010|09:30pm]

Anyone recommend a tailor for having custom clothing made? Looking for stylish and (relatively) cost effective, not worried about speed or much else. I'm near Bloomfield, if it matters.

As far as regular clothes go, "big and tall" means "linebacker", not "basketball player", unfortunately. Help?

Té Café closing? [18 Mar 2010|07:10pm]

pittsburgh

[jegrasso]
I heard a rumor that Té Café at Murray and Beacon in Squirrel Hill is closing at the end of the month. There is also a "For Lease" sign in the window. Does anyone know anything about this?

I've never been one to hang out in coffee/tea/anything else shops, but I did appreciate the local availability of many loose teas. If they indeed close, where else in the city can I get loose tea? In particular, I have yet to find another source for pu-erh tea.

Thanks!

Beaded Morpho Cypris [18 Mar 2010|08:37pm]

A Peruvian butterfly Morpho Cypris
Czech seed beads #11, 19 colours.

The pic is clickable.
Morpho butterflies have metallic shimmering shades of blue and green on dorsal side of their wings. Such colouration is a result not of pigmentation but of iridescence. So, the colours we see vary with viewing angle, they may change from ligth cyan to deep green from pale pink to dark violet in the same place.
Thus two wings of one Morpho butterfly almost always look different.

Driving school/instructor [18 Mar 2010|11:01am]

[diesel_driver]
I'm looking for driving schools/instructors in Pittsburgh area who teach to drive a car with manual transmission and who would provide a car for that. All the places I have called either do automatic transmission only or can only teach manual if you bring your own car.
Thanks.

R.I.P. Alex Chilton [18 Mar 2010|10:29am]

bishopjoey
I got into Chilton in the 80s, probably after the Replacements' Pleased to Meet Me was released with its tribute to Chilton and the song's refrain, "I never travel far, without a little Big Star".

So my friends and I who were big 'mats fans tracked down Big Star's three albums (only available on UK import at the time), #1 Record, Radio City, and Sister Lovers. And then Chilton's (admittedly uneven) solo output - Like Flies on Sherbert, Bach's Bottom, High Priest (which should have been huge) and others released on small labels for short periods of time. We even listened to the hit pop of Chilton's first band the Box Tops. We liked the voice, but it was too sweet, too southern for us. WeChildren by the millions... were mostly listening to Minneapolis punk - Husker Du and the 'mats back to back to back.

The man had a #1 hit at the age of, what, 16? (Now, recall the original 1967 hit, not Joe Cocker's cover) "Buy me a ticket for an aeroplane, ain't got time to take a fast train. Lonely days are gone, I'm a-going home - my baby wrote me a letter". Yeah. That was Alex Chilton. Never matched it in sales, but certainly in brilliance. Like the Velvet Underground, most anyone who bought a Big Star album, started a band. Mind you, it might have been the same bunch who bought the VU records.

I missed the Big Star reunions that started in the '90s (alas, they were supposed to play again next week at SXSW), but did see him at the I-Beam in '88 on a double bill with The Jazz Butcher. Right up at the front. Brilliant, but not sure, it seems, what to make of the small crowd of rabid fans he drew.

Sad loss.

Recommendations? [17 Mar 2010|10:24pm]

Okay, Pittsburgh, help me out, please?

I need a new bank. I am currently at Citizens, and I am not happy with them for an assortment of reasons, number one being that their online banking system simply sucks.

My first choice would be PNC, but I've already gone through this bank and while I realise that the fault is entirely my own, I had some issues there which ended with me having to leave them.

So I'm asking for recommendations that are not Citizens or PNC. Where do you bank, and do you like it, and why do you like it? If it helps at all, I am in Bloomfield, and the most convenient banks to me (aside, of course, from the banks already mentioned) are First Commonwealth and Fifth Third. I think there may be another option or two nearby, but I am unsure.

Thank you in advance.

Excuse me, what? [17 Mar 2010|06:55pm]

waitingtables

[ohei]
This is my first serving job ever (it's my second week, eep), and something incredibly strange happened today. I work at a Chinese restaurant, so of course we give out fortune cookies after the meal. I waited on a table of two; the man was in his thirties, I think, and he was with a very pretty blond lady, maybe late twenties or early thirties. I couldn't tell if they were dating or the like. I gave them their cookies on a tip tray, and later as I walked by their table, the man asked to borrow my pen. After they left, I went to clear their table and I found the fortunes and my pen on the tray, next to my tip. I opened them, and one said 'An alien of some sort will be appearing to you shortly!' Except 'alien' was crossed out, and 'penis' was written above it.

???

What weird things have happened to you while serving?

Just a 'thank-you' to this community for sharing resources in general. I refer to them on a regular basis, and send new citizens of Pittsburgh here for content as well.

Today's specific thank-you is for providing dentist references in the tagged posts. Found one in my insurance network within walking distance of home because of yinz! Awesome!

What are some good places to buy supplies (decorations, prizes, favours, games, etc) for a baby shower?

The closer to Oakland the better, but I'm bribing my friend who has a car to help me so it can be further out and not on a bus route.
